When Treasure Turns Into Testimony: Living Romans 10 in a Noisy World
Romans 10:14–17“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? … So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (ESV)
There is a quiet honesty woven into Romans 10:14–17—one that gently exposes the heart before it commands the mouth. Paul explains how the message of Christ travels from one life to another: someone is sent, someone speaks, someone hears, someone believes, someone calls on the Lord, and God saves. But beneath his logical chain sits a spiritual truth we often overlook:
We naturally talk most about what we treasure most. And if we rarely speak of Christ, it may not be a speaking problem. It may be a treasure problem.
This passage invites every believer—new or seasoned—into a deeper honesty: Why does Jesus sometimes fall out of our conversations? Why is it easier to speak about everything else? And how do we shift our treasure toward what is eternal?
The Problem: A Crowded Heart and a Quiet Mouth
Most Christians don’t stay silent about Jesus because they don’t care, don’t know enough, or don’t want to help others. Silence often comes from three struggles:
• Our hearts get crowded with lesser treasures. The pressures, pleasures, and distractions of life easily push Christ to the margins.
• Speaking of Christ feels vulnerable .It exposes us. It risks rejection. It reveals our faith in a world that may not applaud it.
• We forget that every person carries an eternal soul. We see the surface—jobs, moods, personalities—but not the soul that will outlive the world.
Romans 10 exposes this gently: when treasure shifts, conversation shifts…and when conversation shifts, hearing happens…and when hearing happens, faith awakens.
The Solution: Treasure Christ, See Souls, Speak in Love
Romans 10 does not pressure us into aggressive evangelism. Instead, it invites us to rediscover Christ as the treasure who naturally fills our words.
Paul does not say, “Force your way into every conversation. ”He says, “Faith comes from hearing.” And hearing only comes when people who love Jesus speak naturally and sincerely of Him.
This is not about force. It’s about formation.
When Christ becomes our treasure…• conversation becomes overflow• compassion becomes instinctive• boldness becomes gentle courage• obedience becomes joyful• and God brings the growth
We are not called to convert people—we are called to sow the seed.
Twelve Practices That Shift Treasure Toward Eternity
These practices cultivate desire, reorder affection, and help us see people the way Jesus sees them.
• Ask God daily to help you see the soul behind the face.
This prayer shifts how you view everyone you meet.
• Ask God to bend your heart toward eternal things.
Treasure changes when affection changes.
• Remove one distraction to give Christ more attention.
Treasure grows where attention flows.
• Spend five quiet minutes each day reflecting on who Jesus is to you today.
Alive, personal love for Christ fuels natural conversation.
• Ask simple, honest spiritual questions when opportunities come.
Not pressure—just presence: “Do you believe in Jesus?” “Did you grow up with any faith?”
• Embrace small steps of courage.
Confidence grows through tiny obediences, not giant leaps.
• Pray for one person by name every day.
Prayer softens your heart and sharpens your affection.
• Let Scripture reshape how you see people.
Watch Jesus love people in the Gospels—and imitate His compassion.
• Talk about Jesus naturally in your own home.
Speaking about Him with those closest to you trains your voice and strengthens your heart.
• Stop measuring success by outcomes.
Your obedience is the faithfulness; God supplies the fruit.
• Value obedience more than eloquence.
God calls feet beautiful—not speeches polished or perfect.
• Celebrate small acts of faithfulness.
Each one reinforces your treasure and strengthens your willingness to speak again.
Closing Reflection
Romans 10 was not written to sit on the page; it was written to shape the way we walk, see, speak, and love.
When Christ becomes our treasure, His name becomes natural. When we begin seeing souls, our priorities change. When we speak sincerely and gently, God brings hearing. And when someone hears, God awakens faith.
Our call is simple: treasure Christ deeply, speak Christ naturally, and let God do what only He can do.
Every step you take toward another soul—every gentle mention of Jesus—every sincere question you ask—is a seed.
And God calls those steps beautiful.
