Working Unto the Lord: True Empowerment in Christ
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” — Colossians 3:23–24, ESV
1. Man's Opinion Isn't Your Measure
When your life’s focus is pleasing God, human opinions lose their power to define or control you. Our culture often places immense pressure on pleasing others, seeking approval from leaders, coworkers, or society at large. But when our highest ambition is walking faithfully with Christ, human judgments diminish in significance.
Remember, man's approval is temporary; God's approval is eternal.
2. Identity Rooted in Christ, Not Performance
The temptation is strong to define ourselves by worldly standards—titles, salaries, achievements, or approval from those in power. Yet, defining our worth through human validation inevitably leads to anxiety, fear, and unhealthy striving. This pursuit replaces the peaceful presence of God with frantic performance.
When our identity is firmly rooted in Christ, our work flows from grace, purpose, and confidence—not anxiety or insecurity.
“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” — Proverbs 29:25, ESV
3. Respect Authority, But Follow Christ
Scripture clearly instructs us to respect and submit to earthly authorities and leaders (Romans 13:1–2). However, respect doesn't require conformity to their methods or values if these conflict with God's commands.
Our primary allegiance is always to Christ. By respecting authority while firmly following Jesus, we become powerful witnesses, standing in integrity and reflecting the character of Christ in all circumstances.
4. Negativity Loses Power in God's Presence
Negative voices will always exist, attempting to discourage, control, or diminish your spirit. But when you consistently direct your work toward the Lord, negativity loses its impact. Criticism and harmful attitudes from others cannot shake a heart firmly grounded in the knowledge that it works primarily for God's glory.
Your worth and value are securely anchored in Christ, not in fleeting human praise or critique.
“So we can confidently say, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?'” — Hebrews 13:6, ESV
5. God as Our Ultimate Report
Ultimately, we answer to one authority—Christ Himself. When we recognize that God observes our every action and intention, our work becomes worship. Excellence, integrity, humility, and diligence naturally follow when we acknowledge that our ultimate "report" is presented to God.
Working unto the Lord changes our approach:
Our actions reflect eternal values.
We seek God’s approval, not human applause.
Integrity guides our decisions.
Grace defines our interactions.
Closing Reflection
Are you letting others define your worth, causing anxiety and fear in your work?
Do you strive for human recognition rather than working confidently, knowing you serve Christ first?
How would your daily life change if every task was consciously done for God’s eyes alone?
Choose today to work as unto the Lord, living and serving from a place of strength, peace, and eternal purpose.
