Matthew 6:1-4 (ESV)
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them... when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Command: "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them" (Matthew 6:1); "do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" (Matthew 6:3).

Necessary Inference: If secrecy in giving is commanded specifically so the gift is "in secret" and seen only by the Father (Matthew 6:4), the presence or absence of an audience is not incidental to whether an act counts as righteousness in this text's terms — it's part of the definition.
Heart Question: Would I still do this if no one but God ever knew?
Where This Leads: "Your Father who sees in secret will reward you" (Matthew 6:4) — the reward structure only makes sense if God himself is a sufficient audience, which is exactly what Christ's own hidden years and secret obedience modeled before public ministry began.
